I don’t ordinarily have the confidence to put together my own world music festival (let alone one with absolutely no budget), but with the encouragement and support of Elena Martiniuc at Nothin’ Less Cafe, I did just that. I had lots of help, of course- performers willing to play for free, recommendations for prospective acts, and even some folks who mentioned wanting to help out at another event next year.

Here are some highlights of Around the World in Eighty Hours, which ran from July 29-31 during the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival. During the whole preparation process I kept telling myself “I’ll never put myself through this again,” but it ended up being so much fun that I’ll probably want to do it again next year.

Last night I made my first punch strip for a mechanical music box. It was easier, but more work, than I thought it would be.

First step was to write out the score on a staff. Guitar Pro is a good tool for that, because you can hear the melody as you’re writing it out.

The next step- transcribing the melody to the punch strip- was easy, because the punch strip looks like a mini musical score. I divided the strip into measures and marked it up with a pencil to match the score. Then I had to punch out holes over all the marks.

My mechanical music box is limited to two octaves of diatonic notes in C, but this limitation resulted in an entirely new arrangement. Here’s my first punch strip, a solo for an original tune, Mandarin Dragonet:

Thanks to the folks at the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce, I was allowed to coordinate the music once per month at the Logan Square Farmers Market in Chicago this summer. Such markets, which nationally have doubled in number in the past decade, feature not only local produce, bread, and cheese, but also local music. There were some memorable performances by the performers and audiences alike. Some highlights included the countless toddlers waddling up to the hat to drop in an entire week’s allowance, crazy new dances invented by the preschool demographic, a bandit child reprimanded by his mom for trying to run off with the money, and a charismatic and wild-haired young boy who played the tambourine and ran sound check.

One of the highlights of today’s market was a whirlpool of children swirling around Julie Jurgens and banging on percussion instruments as she played children’s classics. Pictured here is John Bellows, who inadvertently demonstrated the dangers of musical self-instruction- playing the guitar on the wrong side.

Scraping together a jarful of pocket change, I took the westbound Diversey #76 to Unique Thrift to give some neglected kitchenware a chance for a second life as the target of my drumming. Eight dollars and eleventeen cents later my kitchenware kit’s now friendlier to the ear: the clamp-handled frying pan rings and sustains like the bells of the midwest’s most illustrious cows; and, my aluminum mess kit snare drum, when struck just right, will trick you into thinking there’s a herd of aluminum horses a-comin’. The whole kit is mounted on a music stand and can still be stuffed (horses, cows & all) into a small handbag, which I’ll be bringing with me to the Andersonville Farmers Market and Racine, Wisconsin this week.

I was flattered to be asked to join Erin Frisby’s temporary Cast of Characters band for her gig at Hog Head McDunna’s this Saturday, March 27 (opening for Stuart Chaseman’s record release). Though I’ll only be playing a couple of songs (doumbek and bodhran), it’s worth checking this show out to experience the descriptive imagery of Frisby’s lyrics, backed by her powerful voice and musical arrangements grounded deep in a wide range of roots music. If I wasn’t playing I’d be there anyway!

You often hear of obscure musicians playing their songs to their lone cat. These days, opportunities are increasing for playing music to other people’s cats. Chicago’s newest house concert series, the Rockwell Crossing House of Folk, was inaugurated yesterday with performances by Ty Maxon and me following an optional potluck. Hosted by Jack Price, an experienced chef and soup entrepreneur based in Lincoln Square, the series features not only a stubborn cat who refuses to give up the best seat in the house, but one of the most attentive audiences I’ve ever played for.

If you live in the area and are interested in attending future concerts in this monthly series, please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with Jack.

So many good songs in this world go unnoticed for lack of promotion or the capricious fortunes of social buzz. One of my greatest challenges as a musician to date was to put together this tribute to Guy Grace, a local songwriter who literally hand prints his album covers in limited batches. Lacking Guy’s rock-star voice or ornamental fingerstyle, I had to arrange his tunes my own way (with some help from my guitar teacher, Frank Rumoro). His classics like “Skeleton City,” “Sword and Shield,” and “The Place That Lives in My Mind” got to see the light of day (so to speak, this was inside Phyllis’ Musical Inn at night, mind you).

Then, I got to see Guy apply his rock-star voice and ornamental fingerstyle to a set of my own songs with his temporary band The Rob-Bots featuring his girlfriend Julie on fiddle and ‘00s rock legend Hoyne LeMoyne on percussion- and I can say I’ve never felt so honored to hear my songs played in Guy’s unique style. Thanks be to Chris Darby, a talented performer in his own right, for convening another unique and enjoyable songwriter night.

And here you can see some footage of the night.
